In the heart of Medina, centuries ago, a young boy sat beneath the shade of a towering date palm. The tree’s broad fronds swayed gently in the warm desert breeze, casting cool shadows over the sandy ground. This wasn’t just any date palm—it bore the Ajwa dates, small and dark, glistening under the sunlight.
The boy watched as his father carefully plucked a handful of these dates, their glossy skins shining like tiny jewels. “These dates,” his father began, holding one up, “are no ordinary fruits. They are a blessing, both for the body and the soul.”
Curious, the boy leaned closer. “Why are they special, Father?”
His father smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling with warmth. Allah has mentioned Ajwa dates in Surah Maryam of the Holy Qur’an and there are many hadiths about Ajwa dates.
“The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, ‘Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates in the morning will not be harmed by poison or magic on that day.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5445).
The boy’s eyes widened with wonder. A fruit so small, yet so powerful—it seemed almost magical.

Modern science has also uncovered the incredible advantages of Ajwa dates. These small fruits, cherished for centuries, offer a wide range of health benefits.

- Heart Health: They contain potassium and magnesium, which help regulate blood pressure and support heart function.
- Digestive Aid: Their high fibre content promotes healthy digestion and prevents constipation.
- Natural Energy Boost: Ajwa dates are a natural source of glucose, fructose, and sucrose, providing a quick energy boost.
- Bone Strength: With essential minerals like calcium and phosphorus, Ajwa dates support strong bones and teeth.

Truly, the health properties of dates go beyond their delightful sweetness, making them a timeless treasure for both physical and spiritual well-being.
As the boy admired the Ajwa dates, a lesson was about to unfold that would show him an even greater way to experience blessings.
A traveller approached them. His clothes were dusty, and his face showed signs of weariness. The father noticed the man’s hunger and, without hesitation, handed him a portion of the Ajwa dates they had just collected.
“Take these,” he said with a warm smile. “May they give you strength for your journey.”
The traveller’s eyes lit up with gratitude as he accepted the dates. He ate them eagerly, their sweetness bringing life back to his tired body.
The boy watched in silence, his heart filled with admiration for his father’s generosity. When the traveller left, he turned to his father and asked, “Why did you give away our dates? Aren’t they special?”
The father nodded. “Yes, they are special. But what makes them even more special is sharing them with someone in need. This is called sadaqah—giving in charity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, ‘Charity does not decrease wealth.’” (Sahih Muslim, 2588).
“Sadaqah is not just about wealth, my son. It’s about sharing what Allah has blessed us with, whether it’s food, knowledge, or kindness. And do you know what happens when we give? Allah multiplies our blessings in ways we cannot imagine.”
The boy’s heart swelled with pride. He realised that the sweetness of the Ajwa dates wasn’t just in their taste but in the act of giving them away.
As the sun began to set, the father and son walked back home, their basket lighter but their hearts fuller. The boy looked up at his father and said, “Father, I want to give sadaqah too.”
The father smiled, placing a hand on his son’s shoulder. “That’s the spirit, my son. Remember, even a small act of kindness, like sharing a date, can bring immense blessings. The sweetness of sadaqah is far greater than the sweetness of any fruit.”
And so, the boy realized sadaqah is a gift that nourishes the soul, just as the dates nourish the body.
