Pay Your Sadaqatul Fitr
Fitrana is a charitable donation of food that must be given before Eid prayer, before the end of the month of Ramadan, for the love of Allah (SWT). Fitrana must also be given by every self-supporting adult Muslim who has food in excess of their needs, on behalf of themselves and their dependants.
Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordained Zakat ul Fitr [Fitrana] to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.” [Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
Pay Your Fidyah or Kaffarah
When a fast is missed through necessity, such as being chronically ill, and it cannot be made up after Ramadhan, Fidyah is payable.
The requirement is to provide one person with two meals, for each day that a fast is missed.
It costs £2 per meal, so for a single missed fast the amount payable is £4.
If fasting is not possible for the whole month of Ramadhan, the total is £120.
Pay Kaffarah
When a fast is deliberately broken without a valid reason, and the person cannot fast at a later time for 60 continuous days, Kaffarah is due.
The requirement is to provide one person with two meals a day, for two months.
It costs £2 per meal, so the total due is £240.
Examples of when to Pay Kaffarah
You will need to pay Kaffarah for breaking fasts or making fasts invalid, when there is no good reason, and you cannot fast at a later time for 60 continuous days.
You will need to pay Kaffarah for breaking a fast, as well as making up for that missed fast at a later date. Kaffarah is due when a person breaks a fast by intentionally eating, drinking or having sexual intercourse.
If any of the above apply to you, and you cannot fast at a later time for 60 days in a row, you will need to pay Kaffarah. Kaffarah for breaking fasts means you need to provide one person in need with two meals a day, for two months, costing £240 in total.
Examples of when to Pay Fidyah
You will need to pay Fidyah for not fasting when you have good reasons for breaking your fast, and you cannot make up the fast at a later date, such as in the following cases:
- People with chronic illnesses, including mental illnesses
- People who need to continue taking their medication & cannot take it out of fasting hours.
- Elderly people who cannot fast
If you need to pay Fidyah for not fasting due to any of these reasons, you can pay your Fidyah with Eternal Aid for £4 per fast missed, which provides two nutritious meals to those less fortunate.
If a person pays Fidyah due to an illness etc but then is able to fast again later in his life then those fasts will still need to be made up despite the Fidyah already having been paid.
