Hadith About Backbiting

مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ

He who believes in Allah and the Last Day should either utter good words or better keep silence
Sahih Muslim 47a

Backbiting, also known as gossiping, is a major social sin in Islam. According to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbor. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should entertain his guest generously and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good or remain silent.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 6051).

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said, “Do you know what backbiting is?” They (the companions) said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He (the Prophet) said, “Backbiting is talking about your (Muslim) brother in a manner which he dislikes.” It was said to him, “What is your opinion about this that if I actually find (that failing) in my brother which I made a mention of?” He said, “If (that failing) is actually in him, what you assert is a backbiting; and if that is not in him, it is a slander.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 6104).

It is important to note that backbiting is not only limited to speaking ill of someone behind their back, but also includes talking about them in a manner that they would not approve of even if they were present. This is why it is important to be mindful of our words and be aware of how we talk about others, both in their presence and in their absence.
